In both production and consumption, Liechtenstein is a global leader in organic agricultural produce. Almost exactly an eighth of all of Liechtenstein’s land is used to produce agricultural products that meet international organic standards. Approximately half of all professional farmers in Liechtenstein are organic farmers. There are also 10 organic-certified food processors in Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein’s consumers are happy to fill their shopping carts with organic produce, with an ever increasing demand for quality food. This is a highlight of the success of the organic farming movement in Liechtenstein, which began less than 30 years ago, in 1990.
The development of organic agriculture in Liechtenstein has been supported by the Farmers' Association in the Principality of Liechtenstein and by Bio Suisse, which is the Swiss Federation of Organic Organizations. Staple products such as milk and vegetables compose the backbone of the organic farming industry in Liechtenstein, but specialty products such as organic wine are also produced with great success.
