On Friday, December 20, 2024, the Principality of Liechtenstein proudly signed the Artemis Accords, marking a significant step in international space cooperation and the peaceful exploration of outer space. The signing ceremony took place at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where Director of the Office for Communications Rainer Schnepfleitner officially signed the Accords on behalf of Liechtenstein, making it the 52nd signatory nation.
NASA Deputy Administrator Pamela Melroy and US Ambassador to Liechtenstein Scott Miller welcomed Liechtenstein as a new member at the signing, marking a significant strengthening of US – Liechtenstein bilateral relations and of Liechtenstein’s international engagement.
“With its participation in the Artemis Accords, Liechtenstein continues its contributions to space exploration, underlines its strong commitment to the rule of law in conducting space affairs and joins a strong group of like-minded countries supporting the peaceful use of space for the benefit of all humankind” said Ambassador Georg Sparber.
The Artemis Accords provide a framework for cooperation in civil space exploration, grounded in principles such as transparency, peaceful collaboration, sustainability, and the responsible use of space resources.
This historic step aligns Liechtenstein with global efforts to advance the Artemis Program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence on its surface as a stepping stone for future exploration of Mars.
Liechtenstein's participation in the Artemis Accords also opens opportunities for innovation, scientific advancement, and collaboration with other nations, reinforcing its dedication to fostering international partnerships and sustainable progress.
