Holiday Recipe: An American Twist on Glühwein

'Tis the season for merriment and the holidays in Liechtenstein would not be complete without a hot mug of Glühwein enjoyed outdoors on a cold, wintry evening while perusing the stands at a local Christmas market. Glühwein (a.k.a. Mulled Wine) is typically red wine that has been warmed through with a mixture of spices and citrus.

As some of us at the Embassy of Liechtenstein are not able to celebrate Christmas in our home country, we've created a special Glühwein recipe - a variation on the traditional recipe that we hope will add warmth and merriment to your holidays. Enjoy!

For the Glühwein:

1/2 Cup Ruby Port

1/2 Cup Curacao

1/4 Cup Sugar

1 Bottle Dry Red Wine

10 Cinnamon Sticks

6 Cardamom Pods

4 Whole Star Anise

Mix port, curacao and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half. Add red wine and spices and simmer for another 15 minutes on low heat. Then serve. If desired, spike it with a little brandy for added punch. Garnish with a slice of orange and a cinnamon stick.

Fröhliche Weihnachten!
